Every hydroponic system answers 1 question: how do you keep roots wet and full of oxygen at once? Each answer trades speed for risk. On a first grow, you may not need a system at all. Coco in fabric pots, hand watered, is the cheapest and most forgiving start, and there is no pump to fail at 2am.
Compare the systems
| System | How it works | Effort | If the pump stops | Best for | On the shelf |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| AutoPot | A float valve refills a tray, the pot drinks from it. No pump, no power | Low | Nothing to stop | Growers who travel or forget | Hydropak Starter Kit, 8 Pot Kit |
| Ebb and flow | A tray floods on a timer, then drains and pulls fresh air into the roots | Medium | Plants dry out within hours | Multi-plant setups, clay pebbles | AirCube 6 Site, AirCube 12 Site |
| NFT | A thin film of nutrient runs past bare roots | Medium | Roots suffer within minutes | Lettuce, herbs, fast leafy crops | HydroCulture NFT 70 Holes |
| Vertical tower | Plants stacked up a column over a reservoir | Medium | Roots suffer quickly | Herbs, greens, strawberries in small spaces | Tower 30 Holes, Tower with LED |
| DWC and RDWC | Roots hang in aerated nutrient | High | A warm or still reservoir can lose a crop in a day | Experienced growers chasing speed | HydroCulture DWC 4 Pot, Current Culture Under Current 6XL |
How to choose in 2 minutes
- First grow, 1 tent: pots and a good watering can.
- Away a lot: AutoPot. It runs on gravity.
- Leafy greens and herbs: NFT or a tower.
- Reusable media: ebb and flow with clay pebbles. See our ebb and flow guide.
- Fastest growth, if you can keep water under 22°C: DWC.

Hydroponic system questions
What is the best hydroponic system for beginners?
Honestly, often no system. Coco in fabric pots, hand watered, is the most forgiving way to learn. If you want automation from day 1, an AutoPot is the simplest: no pump, no timer and no power.
What is the difference between NFT and an aeroponic tower?
NFT runs a thin film of nutrient past roots lying in a channel. A tower stacks plants up a column and feeds them from the top. The HydroCulture towers combine both ideas. Both suit leafy greens, herbs and strawberries better than big fruiting plants.
How does ebb and flow work?
A pump floods the tray or pots on a timer, usually 1 to 3 times a day, then the water drains back to the tank. As it drains it pulls fresh air down through the roots. It is simple and robust, but a failed pump or timer gives no warning. Our ebb and flow guide covers setup.
Can I go away for a week with a hydroponic system?
With an AutoPot, yes. It refills from a tank by gravity. AutoPot says the 35L tank in the Hydropak Starter Kit lasts 4 to 5 weeks for young plants and at least 3 weeks for strongly growing ones.
