๐Ÿƒ Cal-Mag, every brand worth having

Why your plants need Cal-Mag

Rust spots on the bottom leaves is magnesium. Marks on the new growth up top is calcium. In coco under LED you are usually short of both.

This is the bottle you use every single feed

In coco on RO water cal-mag goes in every time you mix, so it is the fastest bottle in the tent to run dry and the one where size actually costs you money.

1

Spots up top is calcium

Calcium cannot move inside the plant. Once it is in a leaf it is stuck, so you see it in new growth.

2

Spots down the bottom is magnesium

Magnesium moves. When it runs low the plant robs the old leaves, so the bottom goes first.

3

Coco takes its cut before you do

Coco holds calcium and magnesium and hands back sodium and potassium. Add LED and RO water and there is nothing left to start with.

Cal-mag goes in first, and the rates are not the same

Into the water before anything else. Add it after your base and calcium and phosphorus meet at full strength, which causes lockout instead of a fix. Rates differ a lot: Total Horticulture is 1 mL per litre, Athena is 2.5 mL per gallon. Use the bottle you bought, not a number off a forum.

What it looks like on the leaf

Read your own plant before you buy anything.

NEW GROWTH, UP TOP OLD LEAVES, DOWN LOW Marks on the newest leaves = calcium Yellow between green veins = magnesium
A leaf showing yellowing between the veins, and the same plant after the magnesium was corrected
Yellow between the veins on an older leaf, and the same plant once the magnesium was sorted. Note the damaged leaf does not repair itself. The new growth comes in clean, which is why catching it early is the whole game.
Not sure what you are looking at?

Send us a photo, or ring (03) 9052 5233 and describe where the marks are. Half the time it is not a shortage at all, it is pH, and you do not need to buy anything. We would rather tell you that than sell you a bottle.

Straight answers
How much per litre?
Depends on the brand, they are concentrated differently. Total Horticulture is 1 mL/L, Athena is 2.5 mL per gallon, Atami is 0.1 to 1 mL/L. Start low and work up. Doubling it is not a faster fix.
Do I need it in soil?
Much less. Soil holds calcium and magnesium and releases them slowly. The growers who really need it are in coco, rockwool, or on RO and rainwater.
Can too much lock something out?
Yes. It pushes EC up and competes with potassium uptake. If your base already carries calcium you may need very little.

Fix it this week

Calcium cannot move once it is in a leaf. The damage you are looking at will not come back. All you can change is what grows next.
