Plant now, flower late summer, finish in autumn

Outdoors the sun sets the timetable. Plants grow while the days get longer, and flower once they start getting shorter after midsummer.

1

October to November: plant out

Once the nights stay mild, into a big fabric pot or the ground, with Great White in the hole. The bigger the pot, the more the plant can grow and the slower it dries out.

2

December to January: grow

Full sun, long days. Terra Vega once the mix's own feed runs out, seaweed through the hottest weeks, and water early in the morning, never in the midday heat.

3

Late January to February: flowering starts

The days are getting shorter. When you see the first flowers set, swap Terra Vega for Terra Flores. That is the whole change.

4

March to April: finish

The plant ripens through autumn. Keep the feed steady, watch for rain on the flowers, and have your drying and storage sorted before the end.

Four things that matter in an Aussie summer

Fabric, not black plastic

A black pot in full sun soaks up heat and the roots against the wall stop working. Fabric breathes and stays cooler.

Go big on the pot

15 gallons or more. A small pot dries out in an afternoon on a hot day.

Water in the morning

So the plant goes into the heat full, not at 4pm when it is already drooping.

Feed half strength in a heatwave

The plant drinks more water in the heat. Strong feed on a hot day burns the tips.

The one thing to buy before you plant

Our best-selling microbe. It only works if it touches the roots, so it goes in on day one.

Goes in the hole the day you plant out. Roots that reach further find water on a 40 degree day.

Three rules for growing outside
1

Big pot or the ground

Outdoor plants get as big as their root room lets them. 15 gallons is the minimum we would use.

2

Veg feed, then flower feed

Terra Vega while the days get longer, Terra Flores once flowers start to set in late summer.

3

Plan for the heat

Fabric pots, morning watering and seaweed. Most outdoor losses in Australia are heat and water, not feed.

Do not plant out too early

If the nights are still cold, the plant sits and does nothing, or flowers early and stays small. Wait until the nights stay mild, usually from mid October in the south.
